“Bill of Rights Day”

WHEREAS, December 15, 2007 markjs the 216th anniversary of establishment of the American Bill of Rights. The people of the United States of America have entered a new century, which separates us by more than 200 years from America's founders, whose exertions and sacrifices brought s recognition of our present Constitutional rights and individual liberties, including personal freedoms; and
WHEREAS, any tendency of American public officials to consider the impact on our personal freedoms and individual liberties of every piece of legislations and official action, with a commitment to favor those freedoms and liberties, also contributes to the preservation of our Constitutional rights and individual liberties. The preservation of which is essential to the well-being of a democratic society and to maintenance of our distinctive American way of life; and
WHEREAS, it is important for the people to El Cajon to understand the roots of America's traditions of Constitutional rights and individual liberties, which begins with readings from the work of America's founders, the U.S. Constitution and the American Bill of Rights. Consciousness resulting from reading these historic documents on Bill of Rights Day 2007 and throughout the year, enables present-day Americans to bridge the centuries separating us from the Founders and contributes to the preservation of our Constitutional rights and individual liberties.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mark Lewis, Mayor of the City of El Cajon, together the the City Council, do hereby proclaim the fifteenth day of December, two thousand and seven to be “Bill of Rights Day” in the City of El Cajob and urge the residents of El Cajon to read the U.S. Constitution / Bill of Rights and to observe the spirit of Bill of Rights Day 2007. I further urge public officials to examine legislation brought before them for its impact on our Constitutional rights and individual liberties.
