The U.S.A. P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act, which stands for “Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism,” needs an overhaul, starting with the name its acronym represents. Few would argue that it is "Uniting and Strengthening America," for instance.

Therefore, the Bill of Rights Defense Committee announces its "rename the U.S.A. P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act" contest. To observe the Act's second anniversary this October, the Bill of Rights Defense Committee invites members of the public to create a more appropriate or amusing name using words that spell out the U.S.A. P.A.T.R.I.O.T. acronym. Examples include: “Useless State-sponsored Action Purporting to Attack Terror while Really Initiating an Oligarchic Takeover,” and “Unbelievably Stupid Act Pillorying All Tangible Rights and Indicative Of Totalitarianism.”

To enter, send up to three entries via post to:

Bill of Rights Defense Committee
8 Bridge St., Suite A
Northampton, MA 01060

Entries must be postmarked by October 15, 2003. Include your name, address, email address, and daytime phone number. Winners will be announced on Friday, October 24, two days before the second anniversary of the mis-named law.
