Engaging Candidates on Issues Related to the Bill of Rights
Take advantage of the election year and ask the candidates where they stand with regard to threatened rights and liberties.
Suggestions:
- Engage your local candidates as well as the statewide and national candidates. Look up incumbents' voting records and use our list of sample questions or develop a brochure outlining key issues (See BORDC's "Defending the Constitution: A 2008 Election Issue"). Create a candidate questionnaire or ask these questions at candidates' public events.
- Ask local candidates to commit to supporting a resolution in your town creating a Civil Liberties Safe Zone.
- Learn more about the candidates' stances and view the voting records of incumbents.
