Job Description: Part-Time Intern (Washington, DC)
Note: All internship positions for summer 2010 have been filled.
Hours
20 hours per week, 10 weeks minimum.
Schedule and hours are flexible, and are determined by the Bill of Rights Defense Committee and the successful candidate(s).
This internship will be based in Washington, DC. Intern will meet regularly with BORDC Executive Director Shahid Buttar but will not work out of a BORDC office.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities will be determined based on the skills and interests of the candidate(s) and the agency’s needs and may include the following:
- Attend and compile summaries of relevant congressional committee hearings.
- Sit in on conference calls with organizational coalitions, PCC affinity groups, etc., and take notes
- Research and post relevant content for the organization's blog.
- Research and write literature, action alerts, press releases, and/or newsletter articles on civil liberties issues such as national security letters or executive branch abuse of the state secrets doctrine.
- People’s Campaign for the Constitution (www.constitutioncampaign.org):
- Organize local student groups and assist with development of campus organizing guide
- Research contact lists (e.g., potential oganizational allies) to facilitate organizing efforts
Required Qualifications
- Computer literacy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Attention to detail and ability to work without direct supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working as part of an organization.
- Knowledge of civil liberties issues, the Bill of Rights, and the U.S. Constitution.
Compensation
This is an unpaid internship. Interns are welcome to seek out internship funding from their schools or other outside sources.
Academic Credit
Interns are encouraged to make arrangments to receive academic credit for their internships. BORDC will accomodate the requirements of credit-earning internships as much as possible.
