Make July 4 the Day to Defend the Bill of Rights!

The 4th of July is a great opportunity to increase public awareness about the threats posed to our liberties by the USA PATRIOT Act and other government actions since September 11. Here are some of the things you can do:

Join your local parade/commemoration

  1. Obtain a permit and march in your local parade as an organization

Pass out literature

  1. Copies of the Bill of Rights;

  2. Leaflets on the USA PATRIOT Act, Homeland Security Act, or PATRIOT II;

  3. Copies of local resolutions urging non-compliance with PATRIOT Act mandates that are unconstitutional.

Carry signs (possibly shaped as the Liberty bell or Independence Hall):

  1. Protect the Bill of Rights

  2. Repeal the Patriot Act

  3. Freedom to Read

  4. Corporations are not Persons

  5. Paul would not Revere the Patriot Act

  6. Has (your congressional representative) read the Patriot Act?

  7. Counter Terrorism, yes, Destroy Democracy, no

  8. The Patriot Act is Not

Create floats:

  1. The Statue of Liberty Gagged (or Handcuffed) by the Patriot Act;

  2. A display of the Bill of Rights, with appropruate symbols for each one;

  3. Paul Revere/Thomas Paine, etc., would oppose the Patriot Act

  4. A Quiz on the Patriot Act (with appropriate signs-Does it allow searches without a warrant? YES! Does it allow the state to obtain your credit records? YES! Etc.)

  5. Heroes and Heroines of Patriotic Dissent-Thomas Paine, M. L. King, Harriet Tubman, Margaret Sanger, etc.

Engage in street theatre (using puppets, masks, music, etc.)

  1. Joe McCarthy is resurrected and creates the Patriot Act;

  2. Big Brother goes about snooping in the pockets, bags, etc. of Just Anybody, takes away their books,

  3. Patriotic Dissenters Run the Patriot Act out of town
